Money influences almost every aspect of our lives. From the cost
of groceries and housing to interest rates, investments, and
retirement planning, financial decisions are part of our everyday
experiences.
Yet understanding the financial world can sometimes feel
unnecessarily complicated.
That’s why we created North Numeral.
Our mission is to make financial news and information more
accessible to Canadians. We believe that understanding your
finances shouldn’t require a degree in economics or years
of investing experience.
Whether you’re opening your first investment account, following
Canada’s economy, or simply trying to make sense of financial
headlines, we’re here to help you understand what matters.
01 / THE BIG PICTURE
Three financial topics worth understanding.
For our first edition, we’re highlighting three subjects that
play an important role in the Canadian financial landscape.
CANADIAN ECONOMY
Why Interest Rates Matter
When the Bank of Canada adjusts its policy interest rate,
the effects can reach far beyond financial markets.
Interest rates influence the cost of borrowing, including
variable-rate mortgages and other loans. They can also affect
savings rates, business investment, and consumer spending.
Why it matters: Understanding interest rates
can help explain changes in borrowing costs and the broader economy.
HOUSING & AFFORDABILITY
Understanding Canada’s Housing Market
Housing affordability remains an important issue for
Canadians, particularly those hoping to purchase their first home.
Home prices are only one part of the equation. Mortgage
rates, household income, housing supply, and local market
conditions all influence affordability.
Why it matters: A lower home price doesn’t
necessarily mean a home is affordable if borrowing costs
remain high relative to income.
INVESTING & PERSONAL FINANCE
Getting Started With Investing
Investing doesn’t have to begin with picking individual stocks.
One of the first steps is understanding the different accounts
available to Canadian investors.
Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs), Registered Retirement
Savings Plans (RRSPs), and non-registered investment accounts
each have different rules and tax considerations.
Why it matters: The type of account you
choose can affect how your investments are taxed and how
you plan for future financial goals.
02 / FINANCIAL KNOWLEDGE
What exactly is a TFSA?
Despite its name, a Tax-Free Savings Account isn’t limited
to traditional savings.
A TFSA is a registered account that allows eligible Canadians
to hold various investments, including cash, stocks, bonds,
and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), subject to applicable rules.
Investment income and capital gains earned within a TFSA
are generally tax-free, even when funds are withdrawn.
THREE THINGS TO REMEMBER
01. A TFSA can hold more than just cash.
02. Contributions are subject to individual
contribution limits.
03. Withdrawals generally create new
contribution room in the following calendar year.
Important: TFSA eligibility and contribution room depend on
individual circumstances. Overcontributions can result in penalties.
03 / BEHIND NORTH NUMERAL
We’re just getting started.
North Numeral is being built around a simple idea:
financial information should be understandable, practical,
and accessible.
Alongside our articles and newsletters, we’re exploring
new ways to make financial education more interactive.
One project currently in development is the
North Numeral Investment Lab, an educational
paper-trading simulator designed to help readers explore
investing with virtual money.
It’s part of our broader goal to help Canadians learn
not only by reading about finance, but by exploring
how financial concepts work.
ONE LAST THOUGHT
Financial literacy starts with understanding.
You don’t need to know everything about finance to start
making sense of your money.
Every concept you learn and every question you ask
is another step toward becoming more financially informed.
Thank you for being part of our first edition.
We look forward to bringing you more financial
insights in the weeks ahead.
Until next time,
